Countless souls dream of becoming a successful fiction writer however, few actually make it to the level of self-sufficiency. Thousands of submissions cross the desks of agents on a regular basis. Many of those submissions are rejected without even being read because the initial pitch failed to catch the agent’s attention.
The first step to becoming a successful fiction writer is to actually become a good writer. One must have a well-developed personal style that sets him/her apart as well as an extraordinary grasp of language and the way it works.
The second step to becoming a successful fiction writer is to practice with many different styles, voices, and genres so you can create a plethora of weapons in your writing arsenal. Work on creating dialogue, descriptions, characterization, imagery, scene building, and plotting and then focus on the areas you feel need to be improved most.
The third step to becoming a successful fiction writer is to focus on the literary devices and figurative language, as they are a must for works of fiction. A successful writer knows where and how to use these devices by studying the way they have been used in other great works that have become so very successful.
The fourth step is to go out and participate with other writers. Join a workshop or guild or even classes as to get feedback from other people who share the same passion. Networking will also get you a lot farther on the business end as well.
The fifth and final step to becoming a successful fiction writer is to force yourself to do things in writing you wouldn’t normally do. Write about things that you don’t find interesting and engage with people you wouldn’t normally speak to. By doing so, you are broadening yourself and in turn the quality and scope of your writing.
