Becoming a Poetry Writer

The Internet is saturated with millions of poets with countless poems. Very few go on to become a successful, prominent poetry writer.  There are a few basic steps that can help one go from writing average poetry to becoming a successful poetry writer.

1.)  Read as much poetry as you can get your hands on. Reading others’ works will allow you to experience others style and will broaden your scope.
2.)  Learn about a specific subject. Having a vast knowledge about a specific subject helps one to write on a deeper intellectual level.
3.)  Expand your vocabulary. Having a broad vocabulary gives you a plethora of words to choose from for each situation.
4.)  Write a book of poetry. It will help you gain exposure and will help with eventually getting published.
5.)  Promote your poetry. Being active in online communities and social networks will also help you gain exposure and insight from others.
6.)  Market your work. Some sites allow you to post your work and will give you a share of the advertising income. You could also start your own blog.
7.)  Share your poetry. Share it with as many people as possible as to get your name out. Hand out flyers, attend open mic readings, and share them with friends and family.
