How to Become a Screenwriter

Hundreds of thousands of people dream of becoming the next big Hollywood writer and see their script play out on the big screen. The road is most certainly a long and difficult one requiting talent, perseverance, and lots and lots of hard work but, the path is not exactly as an aspiring Hollywood writer would think.

The first step is to of course, know how to write a good screenplay. A good screenplay writer must understand not only how to tell a story but how to tell a story in cinematic terms. Learn how to develop the classic three-act structure, character arc, and how to reveal vital information visually.

The second step is to get an agent. A screenwriter knows how to write and an agent knows business. Screenplay agents help to sell the script as well as negotiate the terms. A good agent will be registered with the Writer’s Guild of America and it is vital to make sure the agent has this credential.

The third step is join the Writer’s Guild of America. The Writer’s Guild is the union that protects writers in Hollywood with benefits much like any other union. The WGA will help you in many aspects such as negotiating with studios, help with networking, fight for residuals, etc.

The forth and final step step is to keep climbing up that seemingly endless ladder. The idea of becoming discovered right off the bat is absurd. Start off with a job in the film production industry. Any job that can be acquired should be taken advantage of. Meet new people and work up the ladder while working on one’s own screenplays on the side.
